block for fabric printing

I've been really inspired by the beautiful fabrics people produce by block printing. So I'm carving out a dragonfly on this lovely piece of red lino and hopeful to experiment on some ivory Indian cotton I've purchased. As a woodblock printer, I find lino so funny to work with. It's all slippery and smooth and not at all like wood. I loved Jesse's tip about keeping your block warm by sitting it from time to time. A good tip on a cold day like today. I have a feeling from what I've read that I'm not cutting deeply enough for fabric printing. I guess I'll soon know if that's the case once I start pressing the block onto the fabric.

  1. You do need to cut quite deeply for fabric, I've found... I'm excited to see what you do with this block!

  2. Is the black what you've cut away, or what you've drawn on your lino to be cut away? I can't wait to see what this looks like when you're done. Do you have an idea for the fabric's use before you start the design? Or design and then see what the fabric can be made into?

  4. Katie - the black parts are the bits I have carved away. Not sure about how the fabric will be used yet. Thanks for all your positive comments :)

  5. i haven't used this orange lino yet .. a boy at the art shop raved about it to me recently and i've been very keen to try it. Yes, the deeper the better. and i too just loved the "sit on the lino to keep it warm" tip - just the best.

  6. have you try rubber block? I made lots of rubber block and they print well on fabric, but they're bit hard to clean though!
