rosalie gascoigne

How is it possible that I didn't know about NZ-Australian artist Rosalie Gascoigne (1917-1999) until I saw her exhibition at the NGV today? All afternoon I've been asking myself if I have been living under a rock (this is, of course, very possible). Just look at all this gorgeous work!
Her story is truly inspiring. Self taught as an artist, she had her first exhibition at the age of 57 and then went on to become the first female artist to represent Australia at the Venice Biennale in 1974.

If you live in Melbourne you can see this wonderful exhibition of her work until 15th March.

  1. Your pics look amazing. How did you swing taking pics in the NGV, I thought that was a big No No. I'm seeing Monet's work at the Art Gallery of NSW this weekend and will trawl a few other favourite gallery spots. I can't wait.

Thanks for the comments on my thoughts re parenting. I agree about the guff stuff. I reckon Syliva Plath and Joy Hester could have told us so much more about what they felt about parenting but they were so derided for their decisions to abandon the role of mother. I wish I could get in their heads and have met both of them. The Heide circle fascinates me.

  2. I asked the gallery staff if I could take photographs and they said yes as long as I didn't use a flash. When I was in NY it was acceptable too in all the big museums and galleries. Cool huh?

I wish Sylvia had lived longer so I she could write more amazing books.
